McAllen Heritage Center museum of McAllen history & culture opened to the public during June 2008. Today, among many accomplishments, we continue to expand our exhibits about McAllen's colorful history, opened our museum gift shop- La Tiendita and we now occupy 100% of the La Placita facility!! Our annual fund-raiser "Chuckwagon Dinner under the Stars" held in spring used to be held at the museum for many years. In 2014 we moved the event off-site due to the tremendous attendance and support we received over the years. The event then partnered with Tony Roma's McAllen stores where our supporters will continue to enjoy the mouth-watering steak dinner and trimmings to benefit our museum. We are also founding exhibitors of McAllen's grand folklife festival: "PalmFest Folklife Celebration" held the first weekend of October at our beautiful McAllen Convention Center. MHC offer children's crafts and book nook, our educational "Traveling Trunks" program, group tours, special presentations, demonstrations and musical concerts, Saturday movies and refreshments for visitors and ongoing projects are always under development. Finally, we are proud to have established a rotating art show "The Artist's Corner" to highlight the work of our local talent at the museum.

We thank the many visitors have walked through our doors to enjoy exhibits and learning about McAllen's past. We look forward to the future as work diligently to continue to fulfill our mission.

MHC remodeling project begins July 31, 2019!
After working on this project for over two years we are pleased to announce that on 7/31/2019, preparations for the remodeling project at the museum commenced and museum is closed until further notice..
Construction commenced during that time as well and the anticipated timeline for completion is mid to late October barring any unforeseen issues that can be typical during demolition especially in older buildings such as ours.
We are very proud that once completed, we will be able to offer our visitors new restroom facilities, an updated exhibit area and a completely new exhibit area for our growing needs!  Check back here for periodic updates.
Reminder--the rear parking lot will NOT BE AVAILABLE to our visitors during the construction period but we should have some parking spaces reserved in front of the building.  Restrooms for museum visitors will be portables located in the rear parking lot.
Thank you everyone for your support of the McAllen Heritage Center- museum of history and culture.
Best regards,
Elva M. Cerda

The MHC Kids Book Nook has been a big success with our younger visitors and parents alike!  The area was developed several years ago in the museum as a way to advocate for literacy and teaching kids love of reading!  The museum will give a book to any child that wishes to take one home!  The Book Nook depends on donations of new or gently used books from the community to keep the book cases full and keep this program active and thriving.  The children's activity area also offers Saturday coloring projects, art classes and other activities as available.  Please check our facebook announcements and website for more information.  Call the museum on any other special activities for kids!  If you wish to make a book donation, we welcome you to do so during our hours of operation.

MHC Participates at McAllen Library Genealogy Symposium

MHC had a productive weekend hosting our display table at the McAllen Library Genealogy Symposium on Saturday, April 1st.   Many visitors enjoyed our seeing McAllen historical photos and artifacts and learning about our downtown museum location!  Special kudos to Spud and Jan Brown for taking the items and setting up along with Nedra who assisted at the event.  (see more photos on our facebook page)

Our 11th Year at PalmFest was extra special!!

The McAllen Heritage Center has been a 11 year founding participant at PalmFest Folklife Celebration! We are deeply grateful to our underwriters that allow us to bring the entertainment, museums and many other cultural and art exhibits to PalmFest every year! Without your support, we could not help celebrate our history and culture at our grand folklife festival every year! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

The MHC "Called to Higher Service" exhibit honoring Valley Country Music icon, Roland Garcia known as "Country Roland" which opened last February was very popular at MHC.  We have kept a portion of the exhibit on display as we continue to focus on this exhibit and our musical icons in McAllen.  "Called to Higher Service" is a rotating display created to remember impactful McAllen or Valleyites that are no longer with us.

Shop at "La Tiendita" when you visit us!

Support MHC through your purchases at our gift shop! We have numerous items for sale including our "We got McAllen history" tees, historic books covering our City 100 year history, citrus industry and medical history, MHC book markers, colorful post cards, sun hats, Christmas ornaments, men's bolos, Centennial pins and many other items. Grapefruit and orange jelly bellies are for sale in small packets in honor of our citrus industry! Look for the big jar chock full of those little delicious little goodies! Thanks to the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, Carmen de Leon and board member Spud Brown for donating items for our inventory!
